I wanted to take pictures of some of my Rubik's cubes, but initially I wasn't sure how I could come up with creative ways to arrange them. At my Bar Mitzvah a few years ago, we gave each guest a 2x2 rubik's cube, and since some people didn't keep them, I have a bunch of identical cubes that I was able to use here. I wanted to tell a story, so the second, third, and fourth pictures tell a story of some sort of religion. They show a leader and their followers, as the leader gains power and ascends while the followers don't reap any of the benefits, but rather just chase after the leader.
I realized that there's such a wide variety of things that you do in the bathroom, that when you think about it, are somewhat incongruous. So I took these pictures to try to show that visually: in the first three, they show a bunch of things used for one activity with one or two objects associated with some other activity which is really not all that similar. Then, in the bottom right, I show an especially wide variety of kinds of things, and that's not even all the things that the bathroom is used for!
For these, I assembled a bunch of objects I associate with my mom for one reason or another. The plant is hers, and it was what I started with. The stack of books are not actually for reading (although, as a professor, she does have a lot of books for that too). Rather, they're cookbooks that she puts her laptop on top of for video calls so that her webcam is at eye level. She also makes kombucha, and the glass bottle is where she usually keeps it as it's fermenting. I liked the composition of the one on the bottom left which I like because of the way I captured the shadows.
These photos are of a few objects that I used a lot while I was sick over the weekend (and when I was out sick on Monday). I really liked getting pictures of objects refracted in the glass of water. The filters (especially fresco and neon glow) were both really cool, although admittedly neon glow took away a bit of what I was going for with that image. I was trying to communicate the feeling of dealing with the illness and just giving up on doing anything productive (by being parallel to the idea of "whatever, just stick the banana in the water"). I think the outcome is still really cool though. And I did eat the banana afterwards.
Fuzz (watercolor)
When trying to think of what to photograph for my final image, I came across a box of wires for a power supply which weren't necessary for the computer I built with that power supply. I thought I might be able to arrange them in interesting ways, and I like how they turned out. They feel like they're building up in intensity from the softer "Introduction" to the very harsh "Fuzz", like a crescendo in music.
